Solapur is world famous for its production of grapes and pomegranates. Solapur also has research centres for this fruits and is one of the biggest exporters in India. Solapur also has the maximum number of sugar factories in Maharashtra.
Solapur has significant presence of Textile Industries. The city is the leader in manufacturing of Towels and Bedsheets which are world famous. Solapur has more than 16,000 Power Looms which employ over 40,000 workers. Ministry of Textile has identified Solapur for setting up Mega Loom Textile Centre, which shall further create 20000 more jobs.
With the arrival of NTPC’s 1320MW Super Thermal Power Station in Solapur, Solapur is destined to become power hub of Maharashtra. Apart from this there are more than 300MW of solar power plants coming up in the vicinity of Solapur which will be connected to state and national grids. This will further help industrial development in and around Solapur.
Solapur is an important centre in the Tourism circuit of Tuljapur – Akkalkot – Solapur – Pandharpur. The city is home to Shri Siddheshwar Temple which draws significant footfall of 5 Lakh + people during the Gadda Yatra festival in January.
Upcoming International cargo Airport
Solapur has an existing airport. However, due to the obstructions, it cannot be use as a full-fledged commercial airport. Government of Maharashtra has therefore, taken a decision to develop altogether a new Greenfield Airport near Boramani village about 15 Kms from Solapur. The airport is developed in joint venture comprising Maharashtra Airport Development Corporation (MADC) and the Airport Authority of India (AAI), The AAI will have a 51 per cent stake in the JVC, while MADC will have 49 per cent. The Government of Maharashtra is setting up 1500 Acres of MIDC near Boramani International Airport. This is a initiative by Governemnt to support the International Airport.
